ABOUT US: SOCIO-ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
UWP - improving the quality of life
In the past year UWP has launched its most ambitious socioeconomic
development (SED) programme to date, focusing
on the three broad areas of socio-economic development,
enterprise development and bursaries.
Socio-economic development
UWP provides financial support to a wide range of projects and
many of our staff put their own time and money into helping
their communities.
Some recent initiatives are:
- sponsoring a twinning project between Grace
College and a technical high school in Edendale
in KwaZulu-Natal to improve the maths standard
at Edendale, including practical assistance from
UWP engineers for maths teachers;
- involvement in a national project to identify the
causes of service delivery failure and to deliver more
speedy, cost effective and enduring solutions;
- creating a playground at Iwahlanga primary school
near Pietermaritzburg and arranging various sporting
events for the Natal Children’s Home;
- sponsoring three under-14 “nippers” from the
Margate Saints Surf Lifesaving Club to attend the
South African National Nipper Championships;
- providing consulting services to double the capacity
of Rehoboth Children’s Village, an Aids orphanage;
- supporting the Congress of Traditional Leaders of
South Africa (Contralesa) to help improve the quality of
life of rural communities.
Enterprise dvelopment
UWP not only provides technical, administrative and financial assistance to our enterprise development partners, but is actively engaged in joint commercial initiatives.
UWP is proud to be associated with three black owned companies. They are Makho Communications, which provides consulting services in training and skills development, community development, enterprise development and local economic development; RW Communications, a marketing and design consultancy; and Richard Nzuza and Associates, an electrical and mechanical engineering firm in the Eastern Cape.
